A fatal road accident in Akwa Ibom State has claimed three lives, drawing attention to ongoing concerns about road safety in the region. The crash occurred on Wednesday at Ette Junction in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area and involved a Mack truck with registration number XS 761 LSD and a commercial tricycle.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, while attempting to overtake a parked vehicle belonging to Sterling Petrochemical and Fertilizer Limited, collided with the tricycle. The impact killed three people instantly. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has yet to issue an official statement, but security agencies were quickly deployed to manage the aftermath and restore traffic flow.
Sterling Petrochemical and Fertilizer Limited confirmed the incident in a statement released through its media unit in Uyo. The company expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the victims’ families. “We regret to confirm a tragic road traffic incident that occurred along our operational route at Ette Junction. While overtaking one of our parked vehicles, the truck collided with a commercial tricycle, and sadly, the incident resulted in three fatalities,” the statement read.
The company pledged to support the affected families and emphasized its commitment to safety within host communities. It highlighted measures already in place to reduce accidents along operational routes. These include distributing free reflectors to local motorcyclists, conducting safety awareness campaigns, enforcing stricter speed checks for company trucks, and deploying over 30 trained flagmen at high-risk areas, particularly during low-visibility hours.
Sterling Petrochemical stressed that it has reinforced safety protocols over the past year to prevent similar tragedies. The company noted that despite these efforts, accidents remain a risk on busy roads, underscoring the need for continuous vigilance and cooperation between corporate operators, government agencies, and local communities.
Police and Joint Task Force (JTF) personnel were mobilized immediately after the crash to secure the area. Their presence ensured traffic resumed smoothly while investigations into the circumstances of the accident began. Authorities are expected to determine whether negligence or mechanical failure contributed to the collision.
The tragedy highlights the broader challenge of road safety in Nigeria, where commercial tricycles and heavy-duty trucks often share narrow, congested routes. Experts have long warned that inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations and poor road infrastructure increase the likelihood of fatal accidents.
For residents of Ikot Abasi, the incident is a painful reminder of the dangers faced daily on local roads. While Sterling Petrochemical’s safety initiatives demonstrate corporate responsibility, the accident underscores the need for stronger collaboration between companies, regulators, and communities to ensure safer transport systems.
As investigations continue, families of the deceased await the support promised by the company. Meanwhile, the FRSC and other agencies are expected to release findings that may guide future preventive measures. The loss of three lives in a single crash reinforces the urgency of addressing road safety challenges across Akwa Ibom and beyond.
