The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has revealed that 31 percent of Nigerian women aged 15 to 49 have experienced physical violence, while more than 28 percent have suffered sexual violence at least once in their lifetime.
She disclosed this while speaking on the state of gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria, noting that the figures reflect the “stark reality” facing women and girls across the country, despite progress recorded in recent years.
According to the minister, the statistics highlight the urgent need for stronger policies, enforcement of existing laws, and community-driven initiatives to curb the menace of GBV.
“These numbers are not just statistics; they represent real lives and the daily struggles of women in our communities. We must act with urgency to ensure that every Nigerian woman and girl is safe, respected, and empowered,” she said.
She also commended civil society groups and development partners for their role in raising awareness and supporting survivors, while stressing that the government remains committed to intensifying its efforts to end violence against women and girls in Nigeria.
