Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with Turkey by implementing a series of cooperation agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed earlier this year. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, made the pledge during a courtesy visit by Turkish Ambassador Mehmet Poroy in Abuja.

The agreements stem from President Bola Tinubu’s official visit to Ankara on January 27, 2026, at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Tinubu’s delegation included six ministers and the National Security Adviser, underscoring the importance of the trip. Several key agreements were signed, covering education, diplomacy, trade, defence, media, halal quality infrastructure, and social services for vulnerable groups.

Among the highlights were a cooperation pact in education, an MoU between Nigeria’s Foreign Service Academy and Turkey’s Diplomacy Academy, and a protocol on military cooperation. A Joint Declaration also established a Joint Economic and Trade Committee to address barriers and expand private sector participation. Additional agreements focused on enhancing social services for women, children, persons with disabilities, and older citizens.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasized that the agreements must move beyond paperwork. She noted that President Tinubu had directed ministries and agencies to submit implementation roadmaps to ensure tangible results. She expressed confidence that upcoming political consultations in Abuja later this year would further consolidate progress.

The minister highlighted the cordial nature of Nigeria-Turkey relations, pointing out shared positions on global challenges such as terrorism, climate change, migration, and reforms in international governance. She stressed that both countries advocate for inclusive systems that promote peace and security.

Economic cooperation is also advancing. Trade between Nigeria and Turkey is approaching $2 billion, including informal sector estimates. The January 2026 trade forum in Ankara aligned with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda, setting a $5 billion trade target. The forum activated the Joint Economic and Trade Committee, providing a structured platform to strengthen commercial ties.

Key areas of collaboration include modernizing Nigeria’s energy and agricultural sectors with Turkish expertise. The adoption of halal quality standards is expected to open access to European and Middle Eastern markets, boosting Nigeria’s export potential.

Ambassador Poroy welcomed the progress and stressed the importance of ongoing defence cooperation. He underscored the need for counter-terrorism consultations in Abuja and expressed optimism that the Joint Economic and Trade Council would help achieve the $5 billion trade goal.

The agreements reflect a broader strategy to translate diplomatic engagements into practical outcomes. For Nigeria, the partnership offers opportunities to diversify its economy, enhance security, and expand international trade. For Turkey, it strengthens its role as a key partner in Africa, deepening political and economic influence in the region.

By focusing on implementation, both nations aim to ensure that the agreements deliver real benefits to their citizens. The renewed partnership signals a commitment to long-term cooperation, with shared priorities in security, trade, and global governance.

In essence, Nigeria and Turkey are moving from dialogue to action, building a relationship that blends diplomacy with practical development goals. The agreements signed in Ankara mark a significant step toward a more structured and impactful partnership.
