A former governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and declared for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

Shekarau who was a member of PDP’s Board of Trustees resigned from the party in a letter addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, dated April 19, 2026.

“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today,” he wrote.

Shekarau, also a former minister of education, while addressing supporters on Sunday at his Kano residence explained his latest political move followed extensive consultations and careful consideration.

“We have weighed all the options and arrived at this collective resolution,” he said. “Do you all agree?,” he asked the crowd and received an affirmative response.

Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, a PDP heavyweight and former senator also joined the former governor for declaring for APC.

In early April, Shekarau received the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yildatwa in his Kano residence, which many has described as a move by the ruling party to woo the Kano bigwig. This followed a close door meeting the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kano governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, in Abuja.
