A Family Court in Calabar, Cross River State, has sentenced a 46‑year‑old man, Imeh Sunday, to life imprisonment for incestuous rape. The ruling was delivered on Wednesday by Justice Blessing Egwu of Family Court 2.
The court imposed the maximum penalty after finding the prosecution’s evidence overwhelming. The Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), a non‑governmental organisation dedicated to defending children and vulnerable women, supported the case.
Principal Counsel of BRCI, James Ibor, described the judgment as a significant step in ongoing efforts to secure justice for survivors of sexual violence in the state. He noted that the organisation has achieved several convictions in rape cases in recent months.
Ibor commended the survivor and her family for their courage throughout the trial. He also acknowledged the role of law enforcement officers, judicial staff, and volunteers who contributed to the case.
He further praised the cooperation of the Cross River State Attorney‑General, Ededem Charles Ani, and the Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid Afegbua. According to him, their support, alongside BRCI’s staff and volunteers, was crucial both in securing justice and in aiding the survivor’s recovery.
The conviction highlights the growing determination of judicial authorities and civil society groups in Cross River State to combat sexual violence. BRCI has been active in pursuing justice for survivors, particularly children and indigent women who often lack access to legal representation.
In recent months, the organisation has secured multiple convictions in rape‑related cases, reinforcing its reputation as a key player in the fight against sexual abuse. Its collaboration with state institutions demonstrates how partnerships between government and non‑governmental organisations can strengthen accountability and ensure survivors receive justice.
Statements from BRCI
James Ibor emphasised that the ruling sends a strong message to perpetrators of sexual violence. He said the case reflects the commitment of the judiciary and law enforcement agencies to uphold the rights of survivors.
He expressed gratitude to the survivor’s family for standing firm despite the challenges of the legal process. He also highlighted the importance of community support, noting that volunteers and staff of BRCI played a vital role in assisting the survivor during recovery.
