The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ahmed Sanusi, convened an emergency meeting on Thursday with all area commanders, divisional police officers, and heads of tactical units. The meeting focused on reinforcing discipline and professionalism within the command.
Sanusi issued a strong directive, stressing the need for officers to uphold the highest standards in their duties. He warned against misconduct that could damage the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force or the FCT Command. He reminded officers of their obligation to respect human rights laws and maintain integrity in all operations.
Senior officers were instructed to return to their respective jurisdictions and immediately brief their subordinates on the directives. They are required to submit compliance reports to the Command Headquarters, in line with the Inspector-General of Police’s mandate. Sanusi cautioned that senior officers would be held accountable if their subordinates engaged in misconduct, underscoring the principle of vicarious liability.
In addition to disciplinary measures, the Commissioner announced new initiatives to improve welfare and operational efficiency. He directed the Command’s Medical Director, ACP Dr. Ifayase Olabanji Akinola, and the Police Counselling Unit to begin comprehensive psychological and mental health assessments for all personnel. The exercise will start with junior officers on Monday, May 4, 2026.
The assessment aims to strengthen emotional stability, improve judgment, and enhance overall performance both on and off duty. By addressing mental health, the command seeks to ensure that officers are better equipped to handle the pressures of policing and deliver effective service to the public.
Sanusi emphasized that discipline and welfare are interconnected and that a well-supported police force is essential for maintaining public trust. He urged officers to take the directives seriously and align their conduct with the values of professionalism and accountability.
The Command also appealed to residents of the FCT to remain law-abiding and cooperate with the police. Citizens were encouraged to report suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest police station or through the emergency lines provided: 08032003193 and 08061581938.
The emergency meeting reflects the command’s determination to strengthen internal discipline, improve welfare, and enhance operational capacity. By combining strict accountability measures with mental health support, the FCT Police Command aims to build a more professional and effective force capable of meeting the security needs of the capital.
