A Kano State High Court has sentenced Abdulaziz Umar to death by hanging after he was found guilty of killing one Mubarak Salisu.
The court also convicted Umar, who lives in Fagge Quarters in Kano, on charges of armed robbery and culpable homicide.
Justice Zuwaira Yusuf, who delivered the judgment, ruled that the prosecution established its case beyond reasonable doubt.
“I hereby sentence the convict to life imprisonment for robbery and to death by hanging for culpable homicide until he is certified dead,” she said.
During the trial, the prosecution counsel, Aisha Salisu, informed the court that the incident took place on October 1, 2020, at Race Course in Badawa Layout, Kano.
She told the court that Umar attacked the victim during Independence Day celebrations. He stabbed Salisu in the stomach and hand with a sharp knife. The injuries led to the victim’s death. The attacker also made away with the victim’s Samsung phone.
The prosecution presented five witnesses and submitted exhibits to support the case.
Umar, however, denied the allegations brought against him.
The prosecutor stated that the offences violated Sections 298 and 221 of the Penal Code.
In his defence, Umar testified on his own behalf through his counsel, Ya’u Abdullahi.
