The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Maiduguri chapter, has firmly rejected the Federal Government’s decision to rename the institution Muhammadu Buhari University.
In a resolution reached after an emergency congress, ASUU-UNIMAID—backed by the Student Union Government and key stakeholders—described the move as an assault on university autonomy, academic tradition, and the historical identity of UNIMAID.
The union condemned the renaming as arbitrary and lacking proper consultation, demanding an immediate and unconditional reversal.
ASUU also announced plans to pursue legal action and urged its national body, civil society groups, and the National Assembly to resist any legislative approval of the name change.
“This is not just about a name,” the union said. “It’s about protecting the soul of our public universities.”
