The Federal Government is set to commence the construction of a N1.5 trillion light rail line in Kano metropolis, aimed at easing the city’s growing transportation challenges.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Abubakar Kabir Abubakar (Bichi), during a press briefing with journalists in Kano on Friday.
According to the lawmaker, the ambitious project is one of several major infrastructural initiatives spearheaded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to develop the northern region.
“The light rail will transform public transport in Kano and bring relief to millions of commuters across the city,” Rep. Bichi said. “Contrary to the narrative being pushed in some quarters, President Tinubu has shown strong commitment to the North through key investments in infrastructure, health, agriculture, education, and security.”
He criticized what he described as “misguided claims” that the President was neglecting northern Nigeria, saying, “It is funny for some people to say President Tinubu is not interested in this part of the country. I am the chairman of appropriation, and I know what the President has done for the North.”
Details about the project’s timeline, design plan, and implementation strategy are expected to be released in the coming months.
The proposed light rail line, if completed, would be the first of its kind in the region and marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s approach to urban transportation development.
