Tensions between Nigeria and Ghana escalated at the end of July after groups of Ghanaians took to the streets, demanding the deportation of Nigerians over alleged involvement in criminal activities.

Protesters in Accra, Ghana’s capital, marched with placards calling for the immediate expulsion of Nigerian nationals, accusing them of contributing to rising crime and social vices in the country.

The demonstration, which drew widespread attention on social media, comes amid a series of high-profile incidents in Ghana that local media have linked to foreign nationals — with Nigerians often singled out.

Diplomatic observers warn that the protests could strain relations between the two West African neighbours if not addressed through dialogue. Authorities in both countries have yet to issue a joint statement, though calls for restraint and fact-based investigations are growing from civil society groups.
