Nigeria’s security forces have arrested Mahmud Muhammad Usman, the most wanted leader of the Ansaru terrorist group, also known by his aliases Abu Bara’a, Abbas, and Mukhtar.

Usman, who has been on the nation’s terror watchlist for years, is accused of masterminding several high-profile attacks across the country. His capture marks a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, disclosed the arrest at a special press briefing on Saturday at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in Abuja.

In addition, Ribadu formally announced the arrest of another top terrorist commander, Abubakar Abba, identified as the leader of the Mahmuda terrorist faction.

“This operation is a testament to the resilience and commitment of our security agencies in dismantling terrorist networks and safeguarding our nation,” Ribadu said.

Security experts have hailed the arrests as a significant setback for Ansaru and allied extremist groups that have terrorised parts of northern Nigeria in recent years. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and further details about the suspects’ networks and accomplices will be released in due course.
