2027: PDP Faces Fresh Division Over Jonathan, Obi, Makinde Presidential Bid

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is once again grappling with internal divisions as the race for its 2027 presidential ticket begins to heat up.

Daily Trust gathered from multiple sources within the party that leaders remain split over whether to field former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, or Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde as its candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next general election.

According to insiders, a faction of PDP leaders allegedly aligned with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, is pushing for Obi, who previously ran under the Labour Party platform in 2023. Another bloc is reportedly backing Jonathan, arguing that his national recognition and past presidential experience make him the only figure within the party capable of mounting a serious challenge against the incumbent.

A third group has also floated the name of Makinde, one of the few PDP governors currently in office, describing him as a younger, energetic option who could appeal to Nigeria’s youth demographic.

Political observers say the emerging tussle underscores the PDP’s struggle to unite behind a strong candidate, a challenge that has haunted the party since it lost power in 2015. With the 2027 elections less than two years away, analysts warn that continued infighting could weaken the opposition’s chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
