The Kano State Government has announced plans to grant amnesty to about 1,600 repentant thugs as part of its ongoing efforts to curb political violence and youth restiveness.

The initiative, tagged the ‘Safe Corridor’ programme, is designed to rehabilitate and reintegrate youths who renounce thuggery and criminal activities.

The Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Waiya said on Wednesday that the government would provide skills acquisition, education, and empowerment opportunities for the beneficiaries to enable them to become productive members of society.

He explained that the move aligns with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to ensuring peace and stability in the state, stressing that the administration is determined to address the root causes of political thuggery, which has been a major challenge in Kano politics for years.

Stakeholders, including traditional rulers, security agencies, and civil society organisations, are expected to collaborate with the government in monitoring and supporting the programme.

Political analysts have described the initiative as a bold step towards de-escalating violence in Kano, but also warned that its success will depend on effective monitoring and genuine commitment from both government and the beneficiaries.
