The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has raised alarm over the worsening malnutrition crisis in Nigeria, warning that 420,000 children could die if urgent action is not taken.
Nigeria’s UNICEF Country Representative, Wafaa Elfadil Saeed Abdelatef, issued the warning on Thursday during her visit to the Maiduguri Field Office in Borno State.
According to UNICEF, out of the 3.5 million children currently suffering from severe acute malnutrition across the country, hundreds of thousands face life-threatening conditions unless immediate interventions are scaled up.
Abdelatef stressed that the crisis requires stronger government commitment, donor support, and community-based solutions to save lives and prevent further deterioration of child health.
The warning comes as northern states, particularly those ravaged by conflict and food insecurity, continue to record alarming rates of child malnutrition.
