Former President Goodluck Jonathan and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, held a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, fueling fresh speculation about the possibility of a united opposition front ahead of the 2027 general election.
The two influential southern politicians have in recent weeks dominated political discourse as potential challengers to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Although details of the meeting were not made public, sources said discussions centered on the state of the nation, opposition strategy, and the need for stronger collaboration among pro-democracy leaders.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, remains a respected figure in national and continental politics, while Obi continues to command significant grassroots support following his performance in the 2023 polls.
Political analysts say the meeting underscores growing momentum within opposition circles to form a broad coalition capable of mounting a serious challenge to the APC in 2027.
Neither Jonathan nor Obi has officially declared interest in contesting the presidency, but their engagement is expected to shape future political realignments ahead of the election.
