At least 4,778 people have died from cholera outbreaks across Nigeria between 2020 and 2024, according to data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).
The agency noted that the disease remains a major public health concern, with over 300 deaths recorded so far in 2025 alone.
In Zamfara State, authorities said 179 fatalities were recorded from 12,052 suspected cases as of September 2025. The state government described the situation as alarming, calling for urgent intervention to curb further spread.
Similarly, Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Auwal Mohammed Jatau, confirmed 58 new deaths from 258 cases reported across 14 local government areas two weeks ago.
Health officials have attributed the outbreaks to poor sanitation, unsafe water sources, and the ongoing rainy season, which increases the risk of contamination.
The NCDC has urged Nigerians to maintain strict hygiene practices, including proper handwashing, safe food handling, and prompt reporting of symptoms to health authorities.
