  • Calls For Urgent Assistance And Preventive Measures Following Devastating Floods

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) expresses its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Niger State over the tragic loss of lives and widespread devastation caused by the recent flooding in Mokwa, Niger State. According to reports, torrential rains have claimed at least 110 lives, displaced countless families, and left many more at risk, marking this as one of the worst floods in the region in over six decades.

NANS National President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, says we stand in solidarity with the affected communities, particularly the families who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. The scale of this disaster, as highlighted by Mokwa’s District Head, Muhammad Shaba Aliyu, demonstrates the need for immediate and comprehensive action to support the victims and prevent future occurrences. The ongoing search and rescue operations reflect the resilience of the people of Niger State, and we commend the efforts of local authorities and volunteers working tirelessly to save lives.

NANS urgently calls on the Federal Government, international organisations, and humanitarian agencies to provide swift and robust assistance to the flood victims. Essential needs such as food, clean water, medical supplies, and temporary shelter must be prioritised to alleviate the suffering of those affected. We also urge the Niger State Government to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure that aid reaches the most vulnerable populations promptly.

Furthermore, NANS National President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, emphasises the critical need for proactive measures to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies. We call for the implementation of sustainable flood management systems, including improved drainage infrastructure, early warning systems, and community education on disaster preparedness. The government must invest in long-term solutions to address the increasing frequency and intensity of flooding, which threatens the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians across the country.
