The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce stricter regulations on TikTok and similar social media platforms, calling for a shift from entertainment-driven content to more skill-based and educational material.

According to government officials, the move aims to channel the creativity of Nigerian youths toward productive digital engagement that promotes learning, innovation, and entrepreneurship rather than just comedy or dance trends.

However, the announcement has sparked intense debate across social media. Many Nigerians criticized the proposal, arguing that the government should focus on addressing pressing issues such as unemployment and economic instability instead of policing online content.

One social media user wrote, “Here we go again. Instead of fixing the economy, they want to regulate TikTok,” while another added, “Try empowering youths offline before policing vibes online.”

Despite the backlash, some Nigerians supported the idea, suggesting that the platform has become overcrowded with “non-productive” content. “That’s a good move. TikTok has lost its value — it’s now full of begging and clout chasing,” one user commented.

Others, however, expressed concern that the regulation might stifle creativity and limit opportunities for young creators who rely on entertainment content for income.

As discussions continue, TikTok remains one of Nigeria’s most influential platforms for digital expression, offering both economic and creative opportunities for millions of young people.
