Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security, Garba Muhammad, has revealed that terrorists have issued threats to bomb the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

Garba disclosed this on Tuesday during a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish the Legislative Security Directorate, an agency designed to strengthen security management and protect lawmakers, staff, and visitors at the National Assembly.

According to him, the complex has been facing increasing security threats, including car and motorcycle theft, vandalism, the use of fake identity cards, and infiltration by unregistered visitors.

He also recalled a similar alert in May 2021, when lawmakers were warned of a planned Boko Haram attack on the National Assembly and other government locations in Abuja. That alert led to restricted access to the premises and heightened security measures.

Garba stressed the urgent need for tighter protection, warning that failure to act could disrupt the country’s legislative process.

“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and threats from protesters to lock up the National Assembly,” he said.

“Legislators are exposed to threats from constituents and others who gain easy access to their offices without formal appointments.

“If proper measures are not taken, it could truncate legislative activities in the National Assembly. Without that, there will be no representation, no oversight, no budget, and no plenary — which could destabilise democracy and national stability.”

The proposed Legislative Security Directorate Bill seeks to provide a dedicated security framework for the National Assembly to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of everyone within the premises.
