Malami To Remain in EFCC Custody As Court Rejects Bail Application

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has denied the bail application of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, , keeping him in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Malami had sought bail while under investigation by the EFCC over allegations of money laundering and abuse of office. The presiding judge, Justice Babangida Hassan, ruled that Malami’s detention is lawful and supported by a valid court order.

The anti-graft agency first invited Malami for questioning on November 28, 2025. During the investigation, reports emerged that his international passport was seized in connection with the ongoing probe into the alleged $490 million Abacha loot, which had been secured by the previous administration through a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLAT) request.

Malami has been detained in EFCC custody since the investigation began. He, however, dismissed the allegations, describing them as “baseless, illogical and wholly devoid of substance.” He further stated that by the time he assumed office as Attorney-General in 2015, the recovery of the funds had already been completed by Swiss lawyer Mr. Enrico Monfrini.

The case remains under investigation, and Malami continues to be held by the EFCC pending further developments.
