A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has said that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would have been prosecuted long ago if there was any credible evidence of corruption against him.
Momodu argued that Atiku served under different administrations and has remained in public life for decades, noting that former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, and even current President Bola Tinubu would not have spared him if he had engaged in corrupt practices.
He made the statement on Monday night while speaking during an X Space session titled “Avrilsspace: The Electoral Mathematics for 2027.”
According to Momodu, allegations of corruption against Atiku have never been substantiated despite repeated accusations over the years.
“There is nothing under the sun that has not been written about Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, but I can tell you that they have not been substantiated,” he said.
Momodu recalled the intense political fallout between Atiku and his former principal, Olusegun Obasanjo, stressing that the former president would have ensured Atiku’s prosecution if there was any proof of wrongdoing.
“Even during the bloody fight between him and Obasanjo, if Atiku was as bad as they claimed, there is no way he would not have been tried at that time, or later by Yar’Adua, Jonathan, Buhari, or even now by Tinubu,” he said.
He challenged anyone with evidence of Atiku’s alleged corruption to present it before relevant anti-graft agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), or the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
“So if anybody knows anywhere Atiku has been indicted for stealing public property or sharing public assets with friends and cronies, they should please tell us,” Momodu added.
The media entrepreneur also described Atiku as a seasoned administrator and committed democrat who does not promote violence or political thuggery.
“My fascination for him increased when I worked closely with him between 2022 and 2023. He is a consummate Democrat who allows everyone equal access. You won’t find thugs or militants parading his house,” he said.
Momodu concluded by reiterating his challenge to critics, insisting that any genuine evidence against Atiku should be formally presented to anti-corruption agencies rather than circulated as rumours.
