Plans for Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to formally defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been postponed, sources say. The highly anticipated move, originally scheduled for Monday, January 5, 2026, has now been rescheduled for Monday, January 12, 2026.
According to close aides, Governor Yusuf requested extra time during a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja, saying he needed to consult with remaining state legislators and key political stakeholders who have yet to fully commit to the defection plan.
Political observers note that the postponement reflects the sensitivity of the move, given Kano’s importance as a major political centre in northern Nigeria. Many lawmakers and local government chairmen have already indicated support, but some remain undecided.
The defection has also sparked friction within the NNPP, particularly between Governor Yusuf and party national leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Kwankwaso, a central figure in the Kwankwasiyya movement that helped propel Yusuf to office, has reportedly expressed displeasure over the governor’s political shift.
Party supporters and critics alike are watching closely, as Yusuf’s eventual move to the APC could reshape Kano State’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
