A retired Nigerian Army Major, Joe Ajayi, has been confirmed dead after being abducted in Kogi State, despite the payment of a ₦10 million ransom by his family in hopes of securing his release.
The tragic development was confirmed on Monday by the Kogi State Police Command, who described the killing as “inhuman and unacceptable.”
“Yes, the body of retired Major Ajayi was discovered by our operatives after the family paid ransom to the kidnappers,” said the Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya. “An investigation is ongoing to apprehend those responsible.”
Ajayi, who was kidnapped by unknown gunmen last week along the Kabba-Okene road was reportedly held for several days as his captors negotiated with his family. After intense pleading and fear for his life, the family raised and delivered ₦10 million in cash.
However, instead of releasing him as promised, the kidnappers killed the retired officer and dumped his body in a forest location, where it was later recovered by security operatives.
“We thought the ransom would save him. That was the only hope we held onto,” a grieving family source said, unable to hide the devastation.
Major Ajayi, who served in the Nigerian Army for over three decades before retiring honorably, was described as disciplined, patriotic officer who contributed to peacekeeping efforts both locally and internationally.
The Kogi Police Command has vowed to pursue the kidnappers and ensure justice is served.
“We will not rest until those behind this evil act are caught and prosecuted,”** said SP Aya.
