The Jigawa State Police Command has detained a newlywed wife on suspicion of poisoning her husband, who passed away after eating a meal she had made.

The incident happened at Gauza village in Jigawa State’s Jahun Local Government Area on January 23, 2026, at around 1700 hours.

In a statement provided to reporters in Dutse, the state capital, on Saturday, SP Shi’isu Adam, the Jigawa State Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the occurrence and stated that the deceased had apparently eaten lunch at home before becoming gravely unwell.

The individual was sent to the hospital for treatment, but while there, he was declared dead, according to the police spokesperson.

Detectives from the Jahun Division acted quickly after the tragedy and detained the deceased’s wife as the main suspect.

Shi’isu SP According to Adam, “the suspect confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison during interrogation.”

The “suspect claimed she sent her cousin to purchase the rat poison used in committing the act,” he continued.

The suspect allegedly told the PPRO that she was coerced into the marriage by her parents, which she said was the reason behind her behaviour.

The Jigawa State Commissioner of Police has ordered that the case be thoroughly investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse, according to the police spokesperson.

He stated that the suspect would be charged with a crime and prosecuted after the inquiry was over.

The police command, meanwhile, asked the public to maintain composure and follow the law and to look for legal ways to settle marital and family conflicts.

The letter also cautioned against enforcing rules on one’s own, pointing out that doing so frequently has lasting effects.

As a result, the police gave the public their word that the command would uphold justice and safeguard people’s lives and property throughout the state.

The PPRO stated that “the suspect is currently in police custody, awaiting trial,” and that “the police will ensure that justice is served in this case.”
