The Canadian provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador have announced plans to recruit workers from Nigeria and other countries as part of an immigration push aimed at easing labour shortages across key sectors.

The provinces have fixed a virtual job fair for February 11, scheduled to run between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. (GMT). The event will be open to international applicants who are willing to relocate to the regions.

Prospective applicants are required to register on the Home Awaits website and upload their résumés before the event. Employers in Newfoundland and Labrador will review the submitted résumés to identify candidates whose qualifications align with available vacancies.

Officials said immigration and employment experts will take part in the job fair. They will respond to questions on career prospects in the two provinces and provide information on living conditions in the regions.

Although applications are welcome from a wide range of fields, the provinces said they will prioritise skilled professionals in social work, kindergarten to Grade 12 teaching in English and or French, aviation, health care, early childhood education, construction, hospitality, retail, and food services.

Applicants who secure full-time employment in either province may qualify for a work permit or permanent residency.

Those who intend to immigrate through the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program must obtain a job offer from a local employer that is valid for at least one year.
