Troops of the Nigerian Army have pushed back a terrorist assault in Kukawa area of Borno State after a fierce overnight confrontation supported by air operations.

A report by Zagazola Makama indicated that one soldier lost his life during the clash.

The publication, which focuses on security developments around the Lake Chad region, cited military sources who said the attackers launched the operation from several directions. They reportedly advanced on foot and also used gun trucks and motorcycles.

“Troops mounted a determined defence, engaging the insurgents in intense combat that lasted into the early hours of Feb. 21 before forcing them to withdraw while dragging away casualties,” the publication reported.

Air support later targeted the fleeing fighters. According to the report, one gun truck and several motorcycles were destroyed during the strikes.

“Air strikes later destroyed one gun truck and several motorcycles carrying fleeing fighters, neutralising additional terrorists.”

The troops also recovered weapons and equipment from the scene. These included 13 AK-47 rifles, 16 loaded magazines, and three handheld radios. Other items linked to the attackers were also found. The report added that there were signs that the group evacuated some of its casualties.

Makama further stated that some military equipment suffered damage during the exchange.

“was damaged by rocket fire, adding that injured personnel were evacuated and are said to be in stable condition.

Military authorities noted that the operation reflects ongoing pressure on insurgent groups in the region.

“Military authorities said the coordinated operations demonstrated sustained pressure on insurgent elements and continued efforts to degrade their combat capability across the theatre,” Makama said.
