A member of the Adamawa State House of Assembly representing Girei Constituency, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The lawmaker submitted his resignation letter during Tuesday’s plenary session, where the Speaker, Mr Bathya Wesley, read it before the House and wished him success in his future pursuits.
In the letter, Abdullahi attributed his decision to the lingering crisis within the PDP.
Meanwhile, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr Bernard Hyelamada, disclosed that more defections could follow. He said, “On Tuesday, the Assembly received one letter from a member representing Girei, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi. More may send their letters on Wednesday during the House plenary.”
The development comes shortly after a senator representing Adamawa South Senatorial District, Senator Binos Yaroe, also exited the PDP.
In a letter addressed to his ward chairman in Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area, Yaroe explained that his decision was influenced by internal challenges within the party at the national level.
The letter reads: “I wish to inform you of the withdrawal of my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.
“This is basically due to the fractured state of the party at the national level.
“In doing this, I remain ever grateful for the opportunity and privilege the party gave me, which enabled me to successfully contest elections in 2019 and 2023 to represent the good people of Adamawa South Senatorial District in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“I wish the party well in its efforts to repair the damage it inflicted on itself.”
Although the senator has not publicly declared his next political platform, sources indicated that he may join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to secure his senatorial ambition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Yaroe is from the same senatorial zone as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is also expected to contest the presidency under the ADC.
A source familiar with the situation revealed that Atiku had assured the senator of support for a return to the Senate in 2027.
In a related development, the Adamawa State PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr Victor Dogo, stated that National Assembly members from the state could align with Governor Ahmadu Fintiri should he decide to leave the party for another platform, including the All Progressives Congress (APC).
