Arsenal’s Set-Piece Coach Accused By Swiss Media Of “Ruining Football”

Arsenal’s set-piece coach Nicolas Jover has found himself at the center of a heated debate after Swiss newspaper Blick accused him of “ruining football.” The criticism comes amid Arsenal’s remarkable success from dead-ball situations this season, with the Gunners sitting top of the Premier League table and chasing their first title since 2004. While their performance has been praised by fans, critics argue that the reliance on set pieces undermines the beauty of the game, sparking a wider conversation about effectiveness versus aesthetics in modern football.

Of Arsenal’s 58 league goals this season, an astonishing 21 have come from set pieces—a record-breaking tally with nine matches still to play. Supporters have embraced this identity, chanting “set piece again, ole ole” after goals and even dedicating a mural to Jover outside the Emirates Stadium. Under Mikel Arteta, the tactical emphasis on dead-ball routines has become a defining feature of Arsenal’s rise, earning them the nickname “Set Piece FC.” For many fans, it is a source of pride; for critics, it is a sign of football’s changing priorities.

On Monday, Blick published an article titled “Is this man ruining football?” alongside a photo of Jover. The piece accused Arsenal of relying on one straightforward but highly effective tactic: crowding the goalkeeper in the six-yard box to prevent him from reaching a sharply delivered cross, which is then flicked on or headed back into the danger area. The newspaper argued that while the approach is undeniably successful, it is “not particularly attractive,” suggesting that Jover’s methods prioritize results over entertainment.

The criticism echoes comments from Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who recently lamented the Premier League’s heavy emphasis on set pieces compared to other leagues. Slot noted that referees in England allow physical challenges on goalkeepers that would be penalized elsewhere, saying: “You can almost hit a goalkeeper in his face and the referee still says, ‘Just go on.’” He contrasted this with his admiration for Barcelona’s free-flowing style from a decade ago, arguing that today’s Premier League matches are less enjoyable to watch, even if they remain fiercely competitive.

Despite Arsenal’s record-breaking numbers, Arteta has insisted he is not satisfied. Speaking after his side’s 2-1 win over Chelsea—a game in which all three goals came from set pieces—he admitted: “I’m upset that we don’t score more. And that we concede as well. We want to be the best and the most dominant team in every aspect of the game.” Arteta emphasized that all goals count equally, regardless of how they are scored, dismissing the notion that set-piece goals are less valuable or less worthy of celebration.

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler added his voice to the debate ahead of Arsenal’s midweek clash with his side. He criticized the Gunners for wasting time and obstructing defenders during set-piece routines, calling for clearer rules on how long teams can delay play during corners, throw-ins, and free kicks. His remarks highlight growing frustration among rival managers who feel Arsenal’s methods exploit gray areas in officiating.

The divide is clear: Arsenal’s set-piece mastery is delivering results, but it is also fueling accusations that football’s artistry is being eroded. With Manchester City still in pursuit, Arsenal’s reliance on dead-ball goals could prove decisive in the title race. The central question remains—has Nicolas Jover revolutionized football tactics, or is he stripping away its beauty? As the season reaches its climax, the answer may depend on whether fans value effectiveness over elegance.
