Barcelona Target Bastoni As Defender’s Decline In Italy Opens Door To Transfer, Echoing Suárez Saga

Barcelona are considering a move for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni as they prepare to strengthen their back line in the summer transfer window. The 26‑year‑old centre‑back, once regarded as Italy’s most reliable defender, has seen his reputation decline sharply in recent months, opening the door for a potential transfer.

Bastoni has faced heavy criticism in Italy following two high‑profile incidents. In February, he was blamed for provoking the dismissal of Juventus player Pierre Kalulu during a heated clash. Weeks later, he was sent off in the first half of Italy’s decisive World Cup qualifier against Bosnia. Italy had been leading 1‑0 away, but his red card shifted momentum. Bosnia eventually won in a penalty shoot‑out, eliminating Italy from the World Cup for the third consecutive time.

These events have damaged Bastoni’s standing in Serie A, where he was long considered one of the league’s finest defenders. His sudden fall mirrors the trajectory of Luis Suárez in 2014, when the Uruguayan striker’s infamous bite on Giorgio Chiellini transformed him from a Premier League star into a player Liverpool were willing to sell.

Suárez’s transfer to Barcelona offers a striking parallel. Before the 2014 World Cup, Real Madrid were close to signing him, even preparing to offload Karim Benzema to Arsenal. But the biting incident against Chiellini in Brazil changed everything. FIFA imposed a nine‑match ban and suspended Suárez from all football activities for four months.

Madrid quickly backed away, citing concerns over his recent knee surgery. Barcelona, however, remained determined. Despite the scandal, they pursued Suárez, who had just shared the Golden Boot with Cristiano Ronaldo after scoring 31 goals in the 2013‑14 season. On 11 July 2014, Barcelona announced his signing for €81 million.

The deal was significant, though still lower than the €120 million plus €40 million in add‑ons Barcelona later paid Liverpool for Philippe Coutinho. Suárez went on to score 198 goals in 283 matches for Barcelona before leaving in 2020.

Barcelona are now in a similar position with Bastoni. The club is planning several reinforcements to remain competitive in Spain and Europe. Defence is a priority, and Bastoni has emerged as a prime target. His diminished popularity in Italy has made a transfer more feasible, much like Suárez’s situation a decade earlier.

For Barcelona, the opportunity lies in acquiring a proven defender at a time when his market value may be lower than expected. For Bastoni, the move could provide a fresh start away from the scrutiny he faces at home.
