A recent report by Consumer Reports has highlighted five refrigerator brands that consumers may want to steer clear of, citing recurring problems with reliability, cooling performance, and customer support. The review is based on surveys of more than 71,000 refrigerators purchased between 2015 and 2025, combined with online reviews and consumer feedback.
While refrigerators are essential kitchen appliances, their high costs make reliability a top priority. With some models now including smart displays, customizable cooling zones, and even built-in coffee systems, buyers must weigh features against durability. Consumer Reports warns that luxury features mean little if the fridge consistently fails.
1. Frigidaire
Frigidaire has long been a household name, but “multiple customer reviews cite problems with the ice maker and water dispenser within months of purchase.” A consumer on Trustpilot reported that Frigidaire sold them a “broken fridge” and refused to replace or refund it.
Complaints also extend to poor post-sale support, failed fridge seals, and frustrating experiences with service centers. Consumer Reports advises thorough research before purchasing, as even careful preparation may not prevent issues.
2. Samsung
Although Samsung is renowned for smart TVs and smartphones, its refrigerators have faced criticism. A class-action lawsuit alleges that French door models fail to maintain food-safe temperatures. The suit noted over 600 complaints, with more than 200 reporting spoiled food.
Customers also shared issues with repeated repairs, particularly with compressors. Samsung’s smart fridge displays, which sometimes show ads, have sparked controversy, though they can currently be disabled. Consumer feedback suggests investing in Samsung smartphones or TVs over its refrigerators.
3. Electrolux
Electrolux, parent company of Frigidaire, reportedly shares engineering designs with its subsidiary, causing similar problems. Reddit users recounted appliances failing months after purchase, especially with ice makers and water dispensers.
“Warranties and post-sale support” have drawn criticism, with repeated repairs needed for some fridges. While opinions differ internationally, American consumers frequently report issues with door gaskets and cooling systems.
4. KitchenAid
KitchenAid is celebrated for stand mixers, but its refrigerators face complaints regarding compressors and ice makers. Customers have said that repair technicians often claim issues are fixed when they are not.
Plastic components inside the fridges may crack or discolor quickly, raising doubts about their value. Despite some reports of general reliability, many buyers hesitate due to concerns over long-term performance.
5. Monogram (GE Monogram)
Monogram refrigerators have been linked to rust, mold, and outright failures. Some customers said technicians offered poor service or even threatened them, and complaints about staff behavior were dismissed.
Regarding performance, one user reported the fridge never cooled below 55°F. Another owner stated that their fridge, purchased in 2008, faced recurring damper issues across 2018, 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025.
How Ratings Were Determined
Consumer Reports based its ratings on surveys and feedback from Trustpilot, Reddit, and other review platforms. Brands were assessed for reliability, temperature control, energy efficiency, and customer satisfaction across different refrigerator types.
The agency’s findings serve as a caution to consumers who might prioritize features over reliability. As Consumer Reports notes, “Having all those goodies doesn’t do you much good if you’re constantly having issues with them.”
