Dortmund Fight To Keep Waldemar Anton Amid Transfer Interest

Borussia Dortmund face a major challenge in retaining defender Waldemar Anton as the summer transfer window approaches. The 29-year-old has attracted strong interest from Manchester United and Atletico Madrid, with Aston Villa also monitoring his situation. Dortmund views Anton as a vital leader and is determined to keep him at Signal Iduna Park.

Reports indicate that United and Atletico have formally enquired about Anton’s availability. Atletico’s pursuit is long-standing, with Diego Simeone’s side convinced his physical style and emotional leadership would suit their system. Aston Villa have joined the race, while Bayer Leverkusen previously attempted to sign him under Xabi Alonso in 2024. Anton instead chose a €22.5 million move from Stuttgart to Dortmund, where he has since become a key figure.

Although often overshadowed by teammates Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can, Anton has carved out an essential role. He has made 37 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring three goals. His consistency and influence have earned praise from head coach Niko Kovac, who recently described him as a selfless leader. Kovac highlighted Anton’s ability to guide teammates while putting the team’s needs ahead of his own, calling it “simply class.”

Anton’s leadership has been crucial during a demanding campaign. His presence in defense has provided stability, and his professionalism has strengthened Dortmund’s dressing room. For a club seeking to challenge Bayern Munich, his contribution has been invaluable.

While speculation surrounds Anton, Dortmund are finalising a new long-term deal for Schlotterbeck. The German international is expected to sign until 2031, with an annual salary of around €14 million. His contract will reportedly include a release clause active from 2027, ensuring flexibility for both player and club.

Attention will soon turn to Anton’s future. Sporting director Ole Book is expected to open talks aimed at raising his current salary of €5–6 million. Dortmund wants to secure his commitment, but interest from abroad could complicate negotiations. For now, Anton remains focused on the Bundesliga run-in rather than contract speculation.

Dortmund sits second in the Bundesliga with 61 points after 27 matches, nine behind leaders Bayern Munich. The title race remains difficult, but crucial fixtures against Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen loom large. Anton’s defensive leadership will be vital as Dortmund attempt to maintain momentum and secure Champions League qualification.

Anton’s situation highlights Dortmund’s balancing act between retaining key players and fending off interest from Europe’s elite clubs. His performances and leadership have made him indispensable, yet his growing reputation ensures he will remain a target. With United, Atletico, and Villa circling, Dortmund must act decisively to keep one of their most important assets.
