Pep Guardiola is preparing his Manchester City side for one of the most anticipated fixtures of the Premier League season as they head to Anfield to face Liverpool. With City having already secured victory in the reverse fixture back in November, Guardiola now has his sights set on completing a league double over Jürgen Klopp’s men—a feat that would significantly boost their title ambitions. However, the Catalan coach is fully aware that Anfield presents a unique challenge, with its atmosphere and Liverpool’s resilience making it one of the toughest grounds to visit in English football.

City’s defensive setup is likely to see adjustments. Ruben Dias has returned to training after his recent injury layoff, but Guardiola may choose caution rather than risk, especially given the reliable form of Abdukodir Khusanov. The Uzbek defender has impressed in recent weeks, and his partnership with January signing Marc Guehi could be crucial. Guehi, who joined City after Liverpool failed to secure his services last summer, adds strength and composure to the backline. Alongside Nunes and O’Reilly, Guardiola is expected to field a disciplined defensive unit, with Gianluigi Donnarumma guarding the goal.

Rodri remains the heartbeat of City’s midfield, anchoring the team with his tactical intelligence and leadership. Guardiola is keen to rely on experienced figures in such a high-stakes encounter. With Jeremy Doku sidelined, Antoine Semenyo could be deployed on the left wing, tasked with exploiting Liverpool’s potential vulnerability at right-back, where Dominik Szoboszlai is expected to feature. Bernardo Silva’s fitness remains uncertain, and Guardiola may opt against risking him, given the depth of options available. Tijjani Reijnders, who impressed against Newcastle, is pushing for a starting role, while Phil Foden, despite inconsistent form, remains a creative option.

In attack, Omar Marmoush has strengthened his case for inclusion with recent performances, but Guardiola is expected to turn to Erling Haaland for the big occasion. Haaland’s presence and finishing ability make him indispensable in a fixture of this magnitude. Supporting him, Rayan Cherki, Foden, Reijnders, and Semenyo could provide the attacking spark needed to break down Liverpool’s defence.
