The Federal Government has set an ambitious target to enroll at least 44 million Nigerians under the national health insurance scheme by 2030.
Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja during a health financing dialogue organised by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in collaboration with development partners.
Pate said the move is designed to transform the dynamics of Nigeria’s healthcare market, ensuring broader access to essential health services while shielding households from the rising burden of out-of-pocket medical bills.
He explained that effective implementation of the plan would not only improve health outcomes but also strengthen the country’s drive toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
“By enrolling at least 44 million Nigerians into the national health insurance scheme, we are laying the foundation for a healthier population and a more resilient health system,” the minister said.
The initiative is expected to prioritize vulnerable groups, including women, children, and the elderly, while leveraging partnerships with states, private sector players, and donor agencies to expand access to affordable healthcare.
