Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has reportedly passed away at the age of 83, according to unconfirmed sources close to his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, and as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985, was one of the most prominent political figures in the country’s post-independence history.
He was known for his “war against indiscipline,” anti-corruption campaigns, and his controversial economic and security policies, which defined much of his two-term civilian presidency.
A Life of Service and Controversy
Born in 1942 Buhari joined the Nigerian military in 1961 and rose to become a major general. He first came to power through a military coup in December 1983 but was ousted less than two years later.
His return to power in 2015 through democratic elections marked the first time an opposition candidate unseated an incumbent president in Nigeria. His administration focused on anti-corruption, counter-insurgency against Boko Haram, and economic recovery, though critics cited growing authoritarianism and economic hardship
