The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, is set to formally defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, Daily Nigerian reports.
Governor Yusuf, currently the only NNPP governor in the country, is said to be in Abuja ahead of the planned defection, where final arrangements are being concluded.
Sources familiar with the development disclosed that Vice President Kashim Shettima and the National Chairman of the APC, Yitwalda Nentawe, are expected to officially receive the governor into the party at a ceremony in the federal capital.
In preparation for the move, key APC figures in Kano State have reportedly adjusted their schedules. The party’s leader in the state and former governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, was recalled from a trip to Dubai, while the APC state chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, was directed to cut short his lesser hajj (Umrah) pilgrimage.
According to party insiders, Mr Abbas is expected to issue the APC membership card to Governor Yusuf at his Diso Ward in Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State later in the week.
If confirmed, the defection would mark a major political shift in Kano State and further consolidate the APC’s hold on Nigeria’s political landscape.
