Former President Goodluck Jonathan has denied reports claiming he accused the late President Muhammadu Buhari of being complicit in the Boko Haram insurgency.
Jonathan, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Ikechukwu Eze, on Thursday, said his remarks at the public presentation of a book written by former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor (rtd.), were deliberately misinterpreted by some sections of the media.
“The attention of the Office of Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been drawn to misleading reports suggesting that Dr. Jonathan alleged that Boko Haram nominated the late President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, to represent them in dialogue with the Federal Government, and therefore this made him somehow complicit in the Boko Haram crisis,” the statement read.
He described the reports as “false and mischievous,” stressing that at no point did he make such claims.
Jonathan explained that his comments were focused on the complex nature of the Boko Haram insurgency and the collective efforts of successive administrations to address it.
He urged the public to disregard the misrepresentation and called on journalists to uphold the ethics of accurate and responsible reporting.
