The Kano State Government has completed the payment of outstanding allowances owed to former local government councillors, ending a financial backlog that lasted over a decade.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approved the final disbursement of ₦8.26 billion to 1,371 councillors who served between 2021 and 2024, bringing the total payout to ₦15.67 billion across three phases and benefiting more than 3,400 former councillors.
Earlier in the year, the government paid ₦1.8 billion to councillors who served from 2014–2017 and ₦5.6 billion to those from 2018–2020.
Governor Yusuf described the move as a restoration of trust and dignity, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to end unpaid benefits. He also disclosed that serving councillors who assumed office in 2024 have received 50% of their furniture allowance, totaling ₦1.27 billion.
The governor announced reforms including digitalized records and improved payroll systems to prevent future arrears. Former councillors and labour leaders welcomed the development, describing it as long overdue.
