The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed that Lassa fever has claimed 168 lives across 21 states so far in 2025.
In its latest situation report for epidemiological week 38, the NCDC said a total of 4,543 suspected cases were recorded, out of which 897 were confirmed positive, representing a case fatality rate of 18.7 per cent.
The agency identified Ondo, Edo, Taraba, and Bauchi as the epicentres of the outbreak, accounting for 67 per cent of all confirmed infections. Ondo State alone bears the highest burden, followed by Edo and Bauchi.
The NCDC urged the public to maintain strict hygiene, avoid contact with rodents, and seek prompt medical attention for symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or unexplained bleeding.
