A tragic boat accident has claimed several lives in Zalla Bango, a remote community in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Eyewitnesses said the victims, mostly women, were attempting to cross a river on Tuesday night to escape renewed attacks by armed bandits when the boat capsized.
Local sources described the incident as devastating, adding that search and rescue efforts were ongoing, with many still unaccounted for.
Banditry has forced thousands of residents in Sabon Birni and neighbouring areas to flee their homes in recent years, with communities caught between violence on land and dangerous attempts to escape through waterways.
