A Nigerian-born United States Marine, Chukwuemeka Oforah, has died after falling overboard from a US Navy assault ship, USS Iwo Jima, during an operation in the Caribbean.
Oforah, 21, who held the rank of Lance Corporal, was reported missing on February 7, 2026, after he fell into the sea from the vessel. His disappearance triggered an extensive search effort that lasted several days before it was concluded on February 10.
According to reports, the death was officially announced on Wednesday. Military authorities have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The late Marine was part of personnel supporting Operation Southern Spear. The mission has conducted dozens of lethal strikes targeting suspected drug trafficking boats operating across the Caribbean Sea and parts of the Pacific Ocean since September.
The operation has also been linked to high-profile security outcomes, including actions connected to the capture of Venezuelan leader, Nicolás Maduro, according to international reports.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by the United States Marine Corps did not disclose specific details on how Oforah fell from the ship.
A senior officer of the Marine Expeditionary Unit, Special Operations Capable, Col. Tom Trimble, paid tribute to the deceased Marine and expressed condolences to his family.
“We are all grieving alongside the Oforah family. The loss of Lance Cp. Oforah is deeply felt across the entire Navy-Marine Corps team. He will be profoundly missed, and his dedicated service will not be forgotten,” Trimble said.
A separate release from the US military disclosed that the search and rescue mission deployed significant assets. It involved five naval ships and 10 aircraft before the operation was eventually called off.
Oforah’s death has drawn attention within military and diaspora communities, as tributes continue to pour in for the young serviceman whose life was cut short in active duty.
