The World Health Organisation (WHO) has dismissed claims linking paracetamol use during pregnancy to autism, stating that there is no conclusive scientific evidence to support such concerns.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the global health body stressed that acetaminophen (commonly known as paracetamol) remains safe for use during pregnancy when taken as directed.
WHO explained that while studies have raised questions in recent years, current research has not established any causal relationship between paracetamol use and developmental conditions such as autism.
The organisation urged pregnant women to always consult healthcare professionals before taking any medication but reiterated that paracetamol continues to be one of the most widely recommended options for managing pain and fever during pregnancy.
