A police officer attached to the Borno State Police Command, Mohammad Muhammad, has returned the sum of N2.6 million that was mistakenly paid into his bank account.
The development was disclosed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, who shared a Facebook post originally made by Bello Jafar. Daso commended the officer for his honesty and sense of responsibility.
“I would like to formally express my appreciation for Mohammad Alhaji Muhammad, a loyal customer of United Bank for Africa (UBA) and a police officer of exceptional integrity,” he wrote.
Jafar also praised the officer’s conduct. He said the action reflects rare honesty and strong moral character.
“His conduct reflects the true values expected of a police officer and serves as an example worthy of recognition and commendation,” he added.
“Acts like this strengthen public trust and highlight the importance of integrity in both professional and personal life.”
Daso, while speaking with TheCable, explained how the incident happened. He said the unexpected transfer occurred at about 6pm on Thursday.
“The officer saw the money and was surprised because he was not expecting that money. So he reached out to his account manager who asked him to go to the bank. When he got to the bank he was asked to fill a form for the reversal,” Daso said.
He noted that bank officials were impressed by the officer’s decision to return the funds.
“The bank officials expressed surprise because what they usually experience in such cases is that the recipients will use the money for their own personal gain. What the officer did shows integrity.”
