The Ogun State Police Command has moved to detain and prosecute a TikTok user, Mirabel, after she allegedly confessed that her earlier rape allegation was fabricated.
The development followed a viral telephone conversation between Mirabel and a social media personality known as VeryDarkMan, also called VDM. In an audio recording that circulated online, Mirabel admitted that parts of her previous claims were not accurate.
In the recording, she pleaded for assistance after she was confronted with messages she had earlier attributed to her alleged attacker.
“Yes, sir, please help me, I am very sorry,” she was heard saying.
She also admitted that she created a threatening TikTok account herself in order to strengthen her claims.
“I have been taking drugs, and I was not thinking clearly when I posted the videos,” she reportedly said.
A senior police source, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly, disclosed that a Divisional Police Officer and other top officers had visited the hospital where Mirabel was admitted for treatment.
According to the source, the police plan to take her into custody after she leaves the hospital and file charges against her.
“The DPO and some senior police officers are currently at the hospital where she is admitted. Once she is discharged, she will be taken into custody, and a charge will be prepared against her for trial. The essence is to serve as a deterrent to others,” the source said.
Mirabel had earlier alleged on TikTok that an unknown man forced his way into her apartment in the Ogijo area of Ogun State and raped her. The claim triggered outrage online. Many users demanded immediate action against sexual violence.
Reacting to the initial report, the state police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police directed the Divisional Police Officer of the Ibafo Division to contact Mirabel without delay.
“She reported at the Ibafo Police Station, where the facts of the case were obtained. Preliminary findings revealed that the alleged incident occurred within the Ogijo jurisdiction.
“She was promptly escorted to a medical facility for assessment and urgent attention. Following preliminary treatment, she was conveyed to the Ogijo Police Station for proper documentation and continuation of investigative procedures,” Odutola said.
The spokesperson added that due to her fragile state, she was referred for further medical care to support both her recovery and the investigation.
Earlier, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency stated that it had reached out to a close associate of Mirabel, who confirmed that she had left the hospital. The agency noted that the case occurred in Ogun State and fell outside its jurisdiction. It said relevant details had been passed to the appropriate authorities.
When contacted for an update on Thursday, the police spokesperson said the command was reviewing the situation and would release an official statement soon.
