Popular singer Simi, whose real name is Simisola Kosoko, has sparked controversy after calling for strict punishment for rapists.
Her reaction comes amid growing concerns over sexual assault cases in Nigeria, with several rape allegations reported in different parts of the country in recent weeks.
Speaking on Tuesday night through a post on X, the singer expressed her anger and frustration over the situation. She called on both citizens and authorities to take stronger action against sexual violence.
“I’m sickkk of this. Stop raping women. They need to castrate rapists and burn them,” she wrote.
Her statement quickly generated mixed reactions online. While some people supported her strong stance against rape, others argued that the same severe punishment should also apply to those who make false rape accusations.
Simi, however, maintained that her focus was on protecting rape victims, not defending false accusers. She said she was speaking out because almost all the women she knows have experienced sexual assault at some point in their lives.
She added that the existence of false accusations should not stop people from speaking against sexual violence or demanding justice for victims.
“How many of your friends have actually assaulted women as vibes?? Women are terrified to go out. Women in their homes are not safe either. Ask your sisters. Ask your female friends and your girlfriends. Ask your wives. We’re not all crazy. Stop raping women,” she said.
The singer also urged men to hold one another accountable. According to her, some men create an environment that enables rapists by failing to call out or correct harmful behavior among their peers.
