The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, marking a dramatic escalation in the state’s ongoing political tensions.

The move was initiated during plenary on Thursday, where lawmakers formally accused Governor Fubara and his deputy of gross misconduct, a constitutional ground for impeachment.

Details of the allegations were not fully disclosed at the session, but the development signals the start of a constitutional process that could lead to the governor’s removal from office if sustained by the required legislative majority.

The impeachment notice was presented on the floor of the House, setting in motion procedures outlined in the 1999 Constitution, including the possibility of an investigative panel should the process advance.

This development comes amid prolonged political rifts within the state’s political leadership, which have repeatedly spilled into the public arena and disrupted governance.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from Governor Fubara or the deputy governor regarding the allegations.

Security has been heightened around the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, while political observers closely watch how the situation will unfold in the coming days.
