The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointments of the newly nominated Service Chiefs, approving their elevation after a closed-door screening session held at the National Assembly.
The confirmation followed the presentation of the nominees by President Bola Tinubu, who had earlier asked the Senate to approve their appointments in accordance with Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act, CAP A20 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Those confirmed include Major General Waheedi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla as Chief of Naval Staff, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Abdullahi as Chief of Air Staff, and Major General Edward Buba as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the plenary, commended the nominees for their records of service and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by ensuring renewed commitment to national security and professionalism within the armed forces.
“We expect total dedication to duty, improved coordination among the services, and a firm commitment to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians,” Akpabio said.
After brief interactions with the nominees, the Senate asked them to “take a bow and go,” signifying their approval and directing them to assume duty with immediate effect.
The new Service Chiefs are expected to intensify efforts in combating insecurity across the country, particularly in the areas of insurgency, banditry, and maritime crimes.
