Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said that President Bola Tinubu is expected to sign the amended Electoral Act into law this month.
He made this statement on Tuesday during an emergency plenary session of the Senate, where lawmakers set up a committee to harmonise the Senate’s version of the bill with that passed by the House of Representatives. The move followed public reactions to some amendments in the Act.
“I believe that if you are able to conclude within this, in the next few days or one week, the President should be able to sign this amended Electoral Bill into an Act of Parliament within this month of February.
“So I wish you a worthy deliberation with your colleagues,” he said.
Akpabio explained that the 12-member committee will work closely with the House of Representatives to reconcile the differences in the versions of the bill passed by both chambers.
He also noted that the committee was expanded after consultations with legislative leaders, in order to ensure smooth collaboration between the Senate and the House of Representatives.
