A former governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Tambuwal, who currently represents Sokoto South Senatorial District in the Senate, disclosed his decision in a letter dated March 11. The letter was addressed to the PDP ward chairman in Tambuwal/Shinfiri.

In the letter, the former governor explained that his decision was influenced by the internal problems within the party. He pointed to the “persistent internal crisis” and “ongoing conflicts” that have affected the PDP in recent times.

Tambuwal also announced that he would be joining the newly registered African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The senator said his decision came after careful consideration and consultations with associates. He wrote that his move “followed deep reflection” and “extensive consultations”.

According to the letter, “The leadership disagreements and divisions within the party at various levels have made it increasingly difficult for me to continue my active participation and commitment as a member.”

He added, “The ongoing conflicts have, unfortunately, weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party.”

Tambuwal, who once served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, expressed appreciation to the PDP for giving him opportunities to serve the country in different positions.

He explained that his decision was also based on his belief that Nigeria needs a “stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development”.

The lawmaker reaffirmed his dedication to serving the country and promoting the principles of democracy, justice, and national unity.
