President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles on their 4–1 defeat of Gabon in the FIFA World Cup qualifying Africa playoff.
Tinubu said the result reflects Nigeria’s resilience and renews the push to seal a World Cup ticket.
He conveyed his felicitations in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, titled ‘President Tinubu Celebrates Super Eagles’ 4-1 Victory Over Gabon, Says Nigeria’s March To The World Cup Continues.’
The President said, “The performance is a clear expression of the Nigerian character that rises, adapts, and prevails.
“The team played with courage, balance, and precision,” he added, reminding the country that football remains ‘one of Nigeria’s most potent symbols of unity and shared pride’.
He noted that the win “adds fresh momentum to the national spirit” and strengthens the collective resolve to reach the finals.
He also commended the playing squad, coaches and the technical and administrative crew for “unwavering commitment to the national cause.
“The victory reflects the deep pool of talent that Nigeria continues to produce and the determination of the Super Eagles to reclaim their place among the continent’s most respected teams,” said the President.
Tinubu praised fans at home and in the diaspora for their passion and loyalty, noting that public backing often proves decisive in tight international fixtures.
He tasked the Eagles to treat the remaining qualifiers as opportunities to show discipline and character while keeping their eyes on the prize.
He stated, “The millions of Nigerians at home and abroad remain a powerful driving force for the players, especially at critical moments of international competition.
“Every match presents an opportunity to show discipline and character, and to prove again that Nigeria’s ambition is firmly within reach.”
The President charged the Super Eagles to sustain the momentum through the run-in to qualification, saying, “This is the true Nigerian spirit of resilience against all odds. Do not stop until you secure a qualification. Super Eagles, keep soaring. The nation stands with you!”
