The federal government has announced major appointments in the energy sector while also unveiling a nationwide security operation ahead of the Easter celebrations.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Shu’aib Aliyu as the new Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF). Aliyu replaces Ahmed Aminu, who resigned to pursue his 2027 governorship ambition in Adamawa State. The President also approved the renewal of Sule Abdulaziz’s tenure as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for a second and final term.

According to a statement issued Thursday by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Aliyu is a seasoned academic and administrator with extensive experience in research and institutional leadership. Tinubu expects him to reposition the PTDF for greater impact in human capital development, innovation, and strategic support for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. The appointment, Onanuga noted, reflects the President’s commitment to strengthening key institutions in the petroleum sector and advancing capacity development for the energy industry.

On Abdulaziz’s reappointment, the Presidency explained that the decision followed a review of his performance in managing the nation’s transmission network. Under his leadership, the TCN recorded improvements in grid stability, expansion of transmission capacity, and system modernization. He also played a significant role in advancing regional electricity integration through the West African Power Pool. Tinubu urged both appointees to discharge their duties with diligence and integrity in line with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed more than 57,000 officers nationwide to secure lives and property during the Easter holiday. Commandant General Abubakar Audi approved the mobilisation, which includes tactical units and intelligence operatives.

NSCDC spokesman Afolabi Babawale said the deployment covers all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. High-traffic areas such as churches, shopping centres, parks, and recreational facilities will be placed under strict surveillance. Both overt patrols and covert operatives will be on duty to deter criminal activity.

Babawale added that zonal commanders and state commandants have been directed to coordinate operations in their jurisdictions. Specialised units, including the CG’s Special Intelligence Squad, Mining Marshals, Special Female Squad, and the Crack Squad, are on maximum alert. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest security formation.

The twin announcements highlight the government’s dual focus on strengthening national institutions and ensuring public safety during festive periods. While Tinubu’s appointments aim to consolidate progress in the energy sector, the NSCDC’s deployment underscores the administration’s commitment to proactive security management.
